47 - Tough Negotiations

Previous Session: 46 - Welcome to the showbiz

Senri casts [Gust of Wind] to put out the starting fire from the Fireball.
After flames dies and the scene clears with the dissipated smoke, we notice spikes of metal suspended in the air where Zoku was, and her hand impaled on the sphere.
Sabine was thrown in a corner wrapped around their ribbon with a few bites, but she's still breathing.

Axel
That was exciting, I'm glad to see you're ok Sabine.
Sabine
Oh geez, ok. Well, I guess I should've seen the fireball coming...
Persy
God damnit people, we were finally on speaking term!
Axel
It's not our fault, you know?
Persy
I'm not mad, just upset.

Senri looks sad, noticing that Zoku died.

Axel
From what she talked, she's going to be revived. She's not dead dead, she'll be back.

Axel uses their [Second Wind] to regain 11 HP.
Balnorin casts [Heal] on himself.
β†ͺ[Insight - Pass βœ”] Balnorin looks like he's confused.

Axel
Hey Balnorin, you ok?
Balnorin
What happened?
Nesvalyn
Ok... what's the last thing you remember?
Balnorin
I dunno.
Axel
To answer you, mostly mimics.
Senri
You killed Zoku!
Axel
And you killed Zoku.
Balnorin
I don't know, I don't recall, it's confusing.
Nesvalyn
What do you recall then?
Axel
What do you mean confused?
Nesvalyn
What's this lantern?
Balnorin
My good friend, I don't recall how I got it.
Axel
You still haven't answered Nesvalyn's question...
Balnorin
I don't know.
Nesvalyn
Ok, do you remember us at least?
Balnorin
Yeah, you're Nesvalyn, there's Senri...
Axel
Can you identify this Persy?
Nesvalyn
It's not really the moment to do that, but these answers are good enough.
Balnorin
And we're on Minavra correct?
Axel
Yeah.

We're picking up Zoku's hand and we go after the manager's. Sabine is splitting for us to get a boat and keep an eye on the cops due to the explosions.
We go to the direction we think the office, and we turn the corner, and behind the lift (being in the middle of the building), we find the Manager's office, as it's the only place where the walls are made in glass.

Speaking to the Manager
...

The Manager looks at us, surprised, then waves at us to invite us. We all enter the room...
β†ͺ[Perception - Pass βœ”] When closing the door, we notice it's sound proof for the rest of the office, which hints he may have not heard our combat back there.

Manager
I told you I would get back ASAP, I was talking about you and your drummer contract.
Axel
Are you going to tell us you're a bad guy?
Manager
Of course I am! Why wouldn't you trust me?
Axel
That's why we don't trust you, as I won't throw you-
Manager (interrupting)
I doubt you can throw me very far.
Axel
That's precisely the thing, I thought I was getting good at metaphors...
Persy
He's taking a chance to insult you, he got you on this point.
Balnorin
Well perhaps they can't, but he can.

Balnorin points Persy.

Persy (mentally)
What are you doing?
Balnorin (mentally)
Playing on your big guy look.
Persy (mentally)
I'm not even that strong!
Balnorin (mentally)
It doesn't matter, you look strong with this big armor, and that's the most important part.
Manager
Are you doing a telepathy thing?
Axel
That's none of your business.

From the desk to the right, we notice another room, which stands out easily in this really minimalistic office.

Manager
It is as you invited yourself, and I'll let you know that my girls still hold your assassination contracts. And once they're back, you're done.
Axel
That's precisely why we came here to get this resolved, what can we do to get rid of this assassination contract? 'cause it's been a pain, as it's killed people, but not us.
Balnorin
It's not really effective.
Persy
It did killed one of us actually...

β†ͺ [(Axel) Insight] Axel starts to feel that strange feeling from their chest and neck, and they realize they're having a feeling. And stopping on that is... guilt. You said something that the party disapproved.

Persy
This has been a problem for us, and we want the situation resolved, but I don't think we should ignore it's been a problem with you too, as it's been such a painful experience for all of us I think. Wouldn't be easier to do something to clean our sleeves and be done with this?
Manager
You know, that's a good idea.
Persy
And we fucking thought having a word with the Bishop would help it.
Manager
No, the Black spots are done with people above Bishops.
Nesvalyn
So, with whom can we talk about it?
Persy
The CEO?
Manager
The CEO.
Persy
And how easy it is to reach the CEO?

The manager laughs.

Manager
Impossible. No one, except me and my girls, can reach him. He's a big fan of the music.
Persy
Well, I mean if the CEO cares for the girls so much, perhaps they would be more incline to speak with us as they keep killing themselves on us?
Manager
Oh. Who cares how many times you kill them? We're Death Inc. We invented the Breathforge. I have 15 copies of these, it doesn't matter, you're gonna die.
Persy
That's a great slogan for your company.
Manager
It is actually.
Persy
If this keeps going, we're going to be a bigger problem, and I don't want to become a bigger problem.
Manager
See, each of my girls thinks they're solo girls. Wait until I send the whole band together.
Persy
I... ok?
Manager
Bodies are being rebuilt right now.
Balnorin
How the soul transfer works? I'm pretty curious.
Manager
I don't know, I'm not a nerd, I do business.
Persy
I mean, sure, they're all come after us, but you call them copies? Are they going to remember us?
Manager
Yeah, it's attached to the soul, not the body.
Persy
You're still not going to have these hands you know.
Manager
You guys have the hands, don't you?
Persy
You let them die in front us, don't you?

He stands up and sits on the desk.

Manager
So, at this present moment, you have the keys to see the CEO. However, you need a whole bunch of Soul power to get it open, and none of you is undead. And the only Soul Crystal who can do it is locked behind a Soulforge.
Persy
Oh damn, there's no recourse then, let's plan our funerals.
Manager
Oh oh oh, there's a recourse.

He starts to roll his sleeves.

Manager
Do you know why there's nothing here?
Nesvalyn
Because it's the dedicated Portal room?
Balnorin
You're minimalist?
Persy
Because you don't need to replace everything after beating up people?
Manager
It's more a rhetorical question, I'm monologuing, shut up.

He coughs and really starts his villainβ„’ speech.

Manager
With all your technically guesses, it's more because I'm a solitary hunter. Did you know that mimics can live forever? And the older it gets, the smarter it gets. Eventually, a Mimic gets so old and so smart it discovers the most mind-body soul trap it can get, it's such... a powerful and beautiful being...

He grabs two shotgun shells.

Manager
And that's a legally binding contract for artists, musicians and composers, being there for so long means you have so many people under your control...

He puts that in a big shotgun, and kicks off his shoes.

Manager
Now, I'll take that if you got here, that means you managed to kill my children. This whole business tower is filled with mimics, but I prefer to call it home.

His feet turns into giant wheels and he starts to shape into a huge beast.

Manager
Which one of YOU I want to kill first?

Nesvalyn brings back Axel using the Boon Stick on them.
The only solid element remaining is a weird badge. When examining it, it's an old access pass to the Mausoleum district.

The Mausoleum district is the main district of Death Inc of Minavra. It's pretty luxurious and contains a Breathforge.
However, only Death Inc employees can access to this district.

We go to check the door at the opposite side, and we're entering in a dark room which lits up when we get in, revealing four pods.
[Investigation - Pass βœ”] The members of D3AD AG4IN are in these pods.

The fate of D3AD AG4IN
...

When looking at the screens, Persy notices the following:

Bodies ready for the Soul Transfer.

[REANIMATE]
[RELEASE]

Persy hovers the "Release" option, which makes the option react immediately.

[RELEASE]
Are you sure?
The Souls are going to be released in the cycle.

Balnorin
Speaking of experience, this sounds our best option.
Persy
This is actually killing people...
Balnorin
They aren't people.
Persy
Because I'm not?
Balnorin
They're Souls. They would reincarnate naturally, and not in these bodies.
Axel
They were definitively people, but I don't think I would consider this killing. They were already dead, and raised undead, and work for Death Inc. I don't think they have a choice.

Persy looks at Nesvalyn, waiting for his input.

Nesvalyn
Well, I... I'm not sure what you want to hear from me here Persy. I agree with Balnorin on this, as they should be back in the cycle. However, we don't know the consequences or releasing them, as it could break their contract and make it worse for them, which could explain why you're hesitant.
Axel
They didn't make that choice, we made it. But as we're going to see the CEO, then saying that we killed their favorite band? It's not going to help.
Nesvalyn
Yeah, also that.
Balnorin
But morally, it's better that we release them.
Axel
Since when do you care it's moral?

Balnorin gives the glareβ„’ to Axel.

Axel
But only the manager would do that.
Persy
But if we reanimate them...
Axel
They would try to kill us.
Persy
Yeah...
Axel
They seem confident to be kill us and get back, so it could be a nice thing to do.
Nesvalyn
Also we can deal one at a time if needed? But as the manager said, fighting all of them at the same time? It would be a rough and tough time for us.
Persy
Let's be realistic, what do you think our chances are to resolve this with the CEO?
Balnorin
30%.
Persy
How much is getting rid of their favorite band would help or go against it?
Axel
Best case scenario, we don't get rid of the band, and the CEO doesn't have another reason to be mad at us.
Balnorin
Assuming it's the only reason to be mad...
Persy
Just getting there already may be a problem.
Balnorin
So removing one could be at our advantage.
Axel
It's just adding another factor, so perhaps not.
Persy
The best case scenario is that they care, but we don't know much.
Balnorin
Just burn the evidence at worst.
Axel
If we're going to stop bringing up that kind of content, then why are we going there in the first place?
Persy
We're trying to make it peaceful, but they're not helping sending people after us.
Axel
I'd like to, as I'm sure there's a chance they would like that. I don't know how much it impacts them.
Nesvalyn
And it may be peanuts for them, and with as the side casualities happenning while they're going after us, it could be beneficial for us to stop the fees. Supposing that the "casualities" doesn't strengthen their ranks.
Balnorin
It's corporation baby.
Axel
I don't think we should touch the band at all, aside to not add another reason to reduce the number of reasons of they would be pissed at us when we arrive.

Leaving us to these three options:

  • We release the souls of the band, and they get back to the natural cycle.
  • We reanimate the corpses, and whatever happens... happen.
  • We leave the room and let the souls in Limbo for an unknown time until someone else either reanimate or release them.

We argue and banter for a while about what to do with that...

Persy
I think we should release them.
Balnorin
Agreed.
Nesvalyn
No objections here.
Axel
Ok.

Persy presses the proper buttons and releases the souls of the band members of D3AD AG4IN until the final screen appears.

Souls released to the cycle.

Axel
So, our next step is to find some Magic Aura scrolls?
Persy
Too bad we never saw them on show.
Axel
There are recordings maybe?
Persy
It's not the same experience.

As we make our way out of the tower and back to the boat, we notice that all the furniture, paintings and any content is melting. Sabine is standing there, mentioning we're in the clear.

Leaving the building
...

Upon getting out, we notice we're yards away from the ground. Along that, we're still in NoMaLa according to Sabine. We team up and we manage to get on the roof of the building. As we don't have a proper way to get down, we decide to contact Sprigg to get some help and pick us up.

Sprigg
'sup?

We hear background noises, like video games.

Persy
Well, we're in a kind of a predicament, can you, ugh...
Nesvalyn (interrupting)
-pick us up?
Persy
Or ask Ludwig as you seem busy?
Sprigg
Yeah, Ludwig's here.
Ludwig
'sup?
Nesvalyn
Can one of you come pick us up?
Axel
We're stuck on a very tall building.
Ludwig
But, I'm tired, I just finished making noodles and running the shop
Nesvalyn
Sprigg then?
Sprigg
Not now, I spent the day looking to fix the ship.
Ludwig
Fiiiiine. Give me the coordinates, I'll be there when I'll be there.
Nesvalyn
Thanks Ludwig.

It takes Ludwig 3 hours to join us. We hear his noodle shop arriving, and the gangway appears to let us in.
Then Ludwig shares Sprigg's progress, as he brought Naus to a shipyard to get it fixed, but it will be expensive to fix (around ~180k credits).

Axel
Let's see if we can pull some strings with the CEO.
Persy
They did the damage, they kind of own us.
Axel
I'd love you to see asking that.
Persy
They love bureaucracy, so we're helping them on that.
Axel
We could get a job and earn the money.
Nesvalyn
Or, I can't believe I'm suggesting it... We just take one of their ships as a compensation.
Persy
I thought we tried to calm things down?
Nesvalyn
We're not to that close, but yeah, that was... just a random thought, it's been too long, I hope we'll manage to solve this soon.

We all get back to our ship, who's being brought down Minavra.
As the journey is long and we're staying silent to keep our strength until we reach our ship to recover, Ludwig turns on the radio and we hear the following news:

We are on our live reportage of a territory war between Death Inc and Druid Corps going on for a few hours. It's a bit soon to say it's a war, but it's what we're thinking.
We go now live with the Bishop Shemna's quote:
It's so unfortunate that my grand niece Anathema was slayed by the Druids themselves, as soon as we received words of her return. I swear, Death Inc won't rest until they stop what they've done to my family. It's unfortunate she died before signing the contract, and live with the rest of her family in her undeath, and I'll be sure that they'll know proper death.

In response, the Archdruid Asher M'kay-Lee replied back:
Bishop Shemna is a liar. There is nothing that me or my druids would do to hurt Anathema. They killed my girl Willow after her position was posted, and Anathema was gloating to be the one she killed. I won't stop until me and my druids remind everybody what it's to be alive.
Conflicts have happened everywhere, skirmish happened between Death Inc and Druid Corps within the whole city, stay indoors, stop your fridges.
And remember, it doesn't matter, you're gonna die!β„’

Nesvalyn (slamming the counter)
THESE SON OF BITCHES! IT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED I WAS THERE!
Axel
They're all blaming each other, as expected.
Persy
How convenient...

[(Nesvalyn) Insight - Pass βœ”] Thinking back, you saw Billy with claw marks on her neck, and the only ones fighting in this style were the shapeshifted druid. When looking at Ana, you assumed they wanted to capture her, but they wanted to slain her in reality.

Nesvalyn
Fuck, what I have done... I... I should've tried to save her...
Balnorin
That's War economy baby.
Axel
Why would they want a war? They already have the upper hand.
Persy
We don't know, we've been here only for a week.
Balnorin
And we don't know how to do it the social way.

The rest of the trip to our ship was in a loud silence, only to be interrupted by some conflict sounds between the factions.

Next session: 48 - Facing Death
